Starting the tear down
« on: November 22, 2017, 05:57:36 AM »
On the last run of an event in August I was down on power and started hearing some noises from the engine. Not sure exactly what is going on, but it's definitely in the bottom end. So last weekend I started working on getting the car ready for the engine pull and rebuild over the winter. All that's left is drop exhaust, driveshaft, shifter, trans bracket and engine mounts then she can come out. Then the "fun" part starts.

Welcome back to the forums man! Also, I had no idea you were having issues. Any idea on what's causing it, what do the noises sound like?

So Will and I are thinking it might be a rod bolt. It sounds like something is tapping on the windage tray. It will run, but does not sound healthy. So I'm going to pull it and tear it down. Probably throw some upgraded parts at it or maybe just build the spare 5.3 that I have sitting on the engine stand.

Just realized that I hadn't given an update to this. Found out exactly what happened...

Found some metal in the oil and attached to the drain plug:

Broken valve spring caused this...

The rest of the engine looked spotless though. Not bad for a junk yard block getting the shit kicked out of it for several years.
