Dam that sucks.  Losing an apex seal already.  I hope there is no major damage on the housing.

Ya. I am hoping there isn't too much damage. I am anticipating there will be so the cost of a new housing doesn't shock me. I have the engine broken down to the keg. Waiting on 54 mm socket to be delivered today so I can get the flywheel off and start tearing down the internals.

1st picture is as of where it sits from yesterday.

Also, the front exhaust port seems to be a hell of a lot more black than the rear. I wonder why. I mean the front rotor is the problem child, but I'm still curious as the difference. Also, when I was spinning the engine I didn't see any direct damage to the apex seals through the window of the exhaust ports, so it's leading me to believe that the end piece of the apex seal might be the culprit. It's all a guessing game until I open the engine tonight, so I will see then.

Tore the engine down last night. I didn't see it at first because I was looking for the broken apex seal, but when I couldn't find one I looked at the other seals. Two broken side seals. Same face. I'm leaning towards build issue. I don't think IR Performance clearanced the side seals properly. Everything about this tear down has kind of pissed me off. IR Performance used silicone everywhere instead of the OEM gaskets. Even on the dowel pins, which made separating the housings from the irons a bitch. They probably used shitty aftermarket side seals. I know they used solid corner seals, which after doing some research are not the most ideal setup for a non race engine. These companies just want to get you in and out. They don't care about your shit. I ultimately feel bad for my buddy who sold me the car because he spent thousands of dollars with IR to have them rebuild his engine to ultimately have it fail in 1,000 miles. IR Performance will more than likely say it was the tunes fault and completely pass the blame.

Now starts the rebuild process. It got late last night, so I didn't take a good inventory of what I need to replace.

Does anyone have any secrets on how to get silicone/gasket maker off of basically every part of an engine? Also, whats's best for cleaning these parts up?

Damn man, this really sucks to hear. Glad you're taking it well and just getting it done though. Very strange that the side seals broke though. Very strange that the OEM gaskets weren't used, but instead silicone. I'd think if it was the tune's fault, you'd see apex seal damage before side seal damage?

Mineral spirits will help take off the RTV.

I put my parts in a parts washer to get the nasty off then soda blasted and glass bead blasted parts to clean them nicely. But then you need to clean the shit out of the parts with soap and water.

Just got these bad mammajamma's in today...

They came with a small round stone. Any idea what this is for? Lightly scuffing the housing surface perhaps?

Never heard of that, I ordered new housings few years back, and they didn't come with a stone at all. Really strange, but it's probably for that then?

Ok so I took the "stone" out of the pacakge when I dropped the housings off at the machinist today. Turns out it's actually a rubber o ring or seal. I'm thinking it's for the oil injectors. Tell me what you think.

Got some more parts in the mail.

Waiting on housings from the machinist and apex seals should be here sometime soon.

Almost ready to start putting the engine back together

Once I have everything, I'll start a new thread for the build.

Awesome! Ever solidify what you'll do to tune it?

I'm thinking about having Steve Kan remote tune it. Banzai never got back to me and it's going to cost me money to trailer the car anywhere, so if I can cut down on some of the tuning cost and have a highly regarded tuner remote tune, I think I'll probably go that route.

Apex seals are in. It's nice getting a package from Japan with OEM parts inside :-)
