Hey everyone, so here's what's up...
We have been thinking about doing a cruise this summer. We are thinking about a nice scenic drive and end up in a state park then have a cookout.
So here's what we need from you...
*We need an idea of the drive location and which park to go to
(we want to do at least a 2 hour drive, most of us should be able to make that trip without having to fill up in the middle lol)
We would obviously all meet in one central location and start from there.
I wanted to post this now because I am sure most of you will be working on your cars this winter so I wanted to give you something to look forward to throughout the cold bitter season.
Let's get some ideas flowing here. We have all winter to plan this out, let's make it a great trip!
~Andrew & the MRC Team
-
nice scenic drive and end up on belle isle for a cook out. :P
I don't really know the scenic areas but I will rev along. ;D
-
Maybe someone could comment on some of the routes found here... http://www.openroadjourney.com/roads/Michigan.asp
I put together a decent route several years ago in and around the Lansing area as part of a Mi Rotary Club cookout. Mostly country twisties north of Lansing. Could recreate that again. There are plenty of parks to meet at around here.
-
If it's around Lansing, the RX8club/Windsor guy from Lansing will prob. be there forsure.
-
Fitzgerald park in Grand Ledge is a very nice scenic park that has a trail along the grand river that you can exploer the sandstone ledges there. Youu can walk the trail all of the way to Island park in downtown Grand Ledge. Overall its a nice park. For those who participate, there is frisbee golf there.
Across the river and a little more difficult to get to is Lincoln Brick Park, there is an old quarry there that you can go swimming in along with remnants of the buildings used in the hayday of brick manufacturing there.
Charlotte Hwy has some nice twists and hills along it from mulliken to portland to put the 7 to some great excersise.
Ok I am Biased since i did grow up in that area.
-
I'm thinking we could all meet in Pontiac? What ever happened to that member map? That would be very helpful to figure out the starting point.
I'll bring the macaroni salad!
-
We can meet in pontiac and head out from there. That works for me!!
-
We know that works for you rich lol.
-
hahahahah ;D
-
Really thought we would be getting more suggestions and ideas for this trip...
Remember its gonna be a cookout so bring whatever you want to eat and we will grill it all up!!
I say we meet at the Loop in Pontiac where we all meet for the Dreamcruise that way people will know an easy way to meet up and head out.
-
I think that a sunday in late march/ early april would be the best time for putting on this cruise. If some one wants to creat a meetingpoint in Grand rapids area that would be good. We can plan to all meet up at Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge MI. For those who have not been to that park before, it is a very pretty park, there are some nice walking trails and a path along the grand river that also has the sand stone cliffs on one side and the grand river on the other.
We can do one of two things. Plan scenic drives from a commpon meeting point that will end at the meet and or plan a scenic drive around lansing area for the meet which could include everyone.
For those that plan on meeting in pontiac with us, we are interested in doing a scenic fun drive to the park. i think it would be a fun idea to do with guys in the grand rapids area that are coming out. Remeber this is for anyone with a rotary, so if you know people with an RX-8 make sure they come out too.
-
Everything sounds great about your route Rich except for the time... Just thinking that maybe late April would be better or even early May cause we could still have snow in March or Early April lol (hell we could still get it in July) Plus we need some excellent BBQ weather.
-
Lets get some dates laid out on the table to vote on!!!!
-
I'm gunna have to agree, if the weather here is anything like upstate NY there is generally snow until the beginning to middle of April and even then there is still significant salt on the road, it is kinda muddy and in the 50s.
I vote Saturday may 14th.
Also we need more people, at this point it looks like we have 5 people on board and the only food we will have is the macaroni salad I am making.
We need some more participation here!
-
Ya macaroni salad being the only thing at a cookout isn't gonna fly lol. I'll bring burgers, buns, condiments, and a couple cases of water.
-
I will bring what ever is needed. Could include side stuff like chips and salsa and pop and some meat stuff too. What ever is thought to be needed.
-
Just saw this thread, sounds like a great idea! May would work well for me, espec since its gonna be top-down weather by then (hopefully). I don't know any great driving roads around here tho, but I'd love to find some! ;D
-
No sunday choices? I was hoping for a sunday that way my wife and i can both attend.
-
If your interest in cars is not exclusively Mazda, it can be a nice back roads drive to the Gilmore Museum in Hickory Corners. I'm sure there are parks in the area.

-
No sunday choices? I was hoping for a sunday that way my wife and i can both attend.
I've got church on Sunday so it depends on when we decide to meet in Pontiac, church is in Pontiac and is over at 12:30, so I could meet then.
I think Saturday is better for most but I could be wrong? I guess that should be the point of the survey.
Anyhow, Charity definitely has to come so just close up shop one Saturday if need be.
-

By the looks of the list I'll have to bring something that is sealed like chips or cutlery or homeland security will take it. Brownies would be a felony for homeland security. ;D I'll take care of napkins, I can get a 1000ft roll of hand paper and garbage bags.
gzfqy6 - why don't you go to church on Saturday?
-
Saturday is Spanish mass at my church. I don't speak Spanish.
-
It looks like there is a Mass at 8am though, I could get to that and be out by 9:30am. I guess that could work for me.
-
You speak Spanish curse words!! Lol.
-
Well if a Sunday is gonna work better then we can do Sunday. Just want to get a majority vote here.
-
They don't say those words in church. But then again I've never been to the Spanish mass before.
OK so lets add Sunday too how about 5/21 5/22 5/28 5/29. Can we change the poll to that?? Feel free to discount my one vote LOL.
-
Poll changed. Sunday dates added. Will your vote was reset.
-
i voted i voted dancing around excitedly. lol
I think Charity and I should bring bruats and hotdogs to the picnic so put down krazykreiner for those items along with macaroni salad
-
Rich, Will's already got the macaroni salad lol. we dont need 2. Unless yours is like 508,498,535,923,845,827,348,957,239,457,783,645,781,364,193,751,374,651,356 times better or something.
-
Well then i will not worry about the maccoroni salad then lol
-
im in when this happens, i got the red car working now so should be fun
-
Plus if we hold it on the 22nd. We can celebrate my B-day.... 2 days early! But sundays work the best for Rich and I with the store!
-
Alright I am going to lock down the voting on March 12th so get your votes in now. We are up to the majority for May 22nd.
-
Also, I see 10 people have voted but the food list only has 5 names on it. come on and sign up for something. we won't be grillng much without charcoal.
-
Reposting list with my additions....

Sweet we're gunna have cooked meat!
As for soda I was thinking:
coke or pepsi
sprite or mountain dew
and then some diet soda of some sort
-
Faygo ftw.
-
Don't forget to get your vote in before this Saturday. Voting will be locked at midnight.
-
Sunday May 22nd is the date set for the MRC cruise. Let's get ready!!!
-
Hell Yeah!!!
Looks like we get both Charity and Rich! Time to plan the route Charity.
-
Alright so aside from actually having cooked meat looks like we will have to do it with our bare hands!!! lol. Hopefully if everyone holds up to this list we will have some good stuff for the day.
-
Charity had picked out two routes from pontiac to Fitzgerald park. I can bring cooking utensils too, just have to remeber to grab them from my grill.
-
Fitzgerald Park, Grand Ledge, Eaton, Michigan - This Fitzgerald Park?
So the initial plan is to meet up in Pontiac the 22nd. (What Timeish?) Then cruise out to the park for eats and chillin. Correct?
-
We are all gonna meet around 11am, bs till everyone gets there then head out.
-
Hmm... gonna have to see how this lines up with my schedule... I tentatively think it'll work, but will need to check
-
i hope that you can make it. Would love to see you there for the event!!!
-
I would love to come but i will be out of town. And plus my car still isnt running, it would be a major scramble to get my engine back in the car and running,a nd i dont wanna rush it and screw something up. I wanna do things right. i will be at one of these events....one day.
-
Any updates or specific times? I live in East Lansing and am 15 miles from the park in GL. As soon as details are available, I might be able to get another RX-8 there, a sharp 2009. Should I see if there's a shelter available for reservation?
-
We should be meeting at Rich's (groll) house Sunday at 10am and leaving from there. Charity, we need you to post the route at your first opportunity.
-
everyone who said they are bringing stuff better be there or you will be hunted down with no mercy!!
-
Is there an address or google map as to where we are meeting?
I have it booked off and I am bringing Napkins, knives, sporks, garbage bags, fender roller, oh and the family.
;D
-
we can either meet at rich and charity's house or "the loop" on woodward right by their house. The same parking lot we have the meet for the dreamcruise. I have to talk to rich to see what he wants to do.
-
Again here is the list of items being brought. Feel free to add your name to the list if you are new to the site and want to participate or if you have been here for awhile and want to bring something else...

I would also like to come to this. [I'm a newbie to the forum].
I can bring something, w/e needs to be brought. I dunno if anyone is familiar with Gonella's, but it's an Italian store in SW Detroit and Dearborn. We're pretty popular for our subs, so I could bring a couple of our whole loaf subs if you guys would like.
-
Hell yeah! I would love a legitimate Italian sub.
-
When do you plan on arriving at the park? I'd show up there since it makes not a lot of sense to drive to the Detroit area only to turn around and come right back. If I know a time, I may still be able to reserve a shelter/grill. The weather is forecast to be good, so Fitzgerald will likely be busy.
-
I can bring the chips / salsa btw.
-
Hey everyone we will have specifics tonight. Trying to tie up the loose ends here. Sorry for lack of info. Will be posting soon.
-
For those meeting near pontiac/woodward loop. Our cruise route will be posted soon. I am sorry i ahvent been on in a while, but been off the forum for a class for work. We will also post our expected arrival time. Right now i am guessing that 1:00 would be appropriate arrival time.
If a shelter can be reserved, then perfect.
The park is fitzgerald park in Grand Ledge. I do not have an exact address, i wil have to look it up.
My personal cell phone is 248-568-1745
Rich
-
ok I am working on the link for directions right now. Sorry guys this has been our busy season at work so just getting back on here.
Please let us know what you plan on bringing by Friday. That way we have time to get things if needed.
I talked to our friends that live there on the loop and the parking lot needs to be cleaned of debris so I think meeting at our house is better.
The address to the park is
133 Fitzgerald Park Drive
Grand Ledge, MI 48837
But Rich (Groll) put his cell on there if you have any problems, questions or anything give him a call.

I used rand McNally driving directions incase anyone wants to look it up. I had to start at our house and add fenton in there, and made sure to add avoid highways. to give us a fun route instead of just a straight boring route.
-
I may or may not be able to swing by and meet up, My car is not plated, but I shall try to meet everyone. I am Grolls brother by the way.
-
Trip total looks to be 87.6 miles. make sure you have a full tank of gas (and your premix) Lets have a great time everyone!! If you are meeting us at Rich and Charity's house be there at 11 am sharp. We will probably bs for awhile and then head out.
-
I would like to bring subs for you guys, the only problem is that the store opens at 10 am on sunday. No matter, I will try to get my boss to make them a little earlier for me. Any estimate on the number of people who will be there? Just so we know how much food to bring.
-
If everyone shows up that says they will or has had interest then we are looking at approximately 8-12 people. What about having them made up the night before and refrigerated over night?? let us know what you come up with.
-
They're not as good when they sit because everything starts to get soggy. My boss is a cool guy, I'm sure he'll be there an hour early if I ask him to.
8-12, does that include friends or family that might tag along?
-
Gotcha. No I forgot to add tagalongs. Most people can only fit one other person except those fancy four door rotaries lol.
