: Help! Hot pipe
: hollanderbill July 13, 2012, 12:42:11 PM
I have a problem with my 84, 12-A. Since I took it out of winter storage it ran great for 15 miles or so. The next time I started it, it smelled hot. In checking, I found the RB header glowing red hot. It idles slightly rough about 1600 RPM.
I checked for obvious vacuum leaks or choke problems, but found nothing.
Now the header will start to glow within a couple of minutes of idling. I can pull any 2 plugs off and it will still keep running.
The only mods are the RB header & I run prenix  1-oz./gal. The aux. oil pump is blocked off. It's been running great like this for 2 years. Milage is 65000.
Anyone have any ideas about what's going on?

i am wondering if it is getting too much fuel and cuasing the excess to burn in the tailpipe.  Might want to check the carberator to ensure its not putting too much into the system.

Do you have a catalytic converter, maybe it's plugged?

3 possibilities for you:

1.  You lost your leading ignition (for whatever reason, it just happens sometimes)
2.  Your timing is horribly retarded (firing too late)
3.  Carb issues causing it to run extremely lean (check levels in float bowl windows)

Good luck. :)
